Captain’s Log: Entry

Captain’s Log 100!!! No better way to bring
in the big 1-0-0 than Team Surfari kicking ass in the
second and final day of the big tourney in San Juan del
Sur. We headed out this morning and made the one hour run
to our Wahoo hole. We hadn’t caught a wahoo in over a
month and really were not too sure that we would even
catch one. The day before, Jasco swore up and down that he
had one on, but he did not see it. We kept our fingers
crossed, and it turns out he was probably right. On our
third pass over the numbers, we got a double hook up, and
it only took about 3 seconds of drag dumping for us to
realize we had two Wahoo hooked up. There is nothing like
hooking up a good fish in a tournament, your blood gets
filled with adrenaline and you are so jacked up it is
amazing. We battled the two fish for about 15 minutes and
then landed both of them. You could have probably heard us
screaming and yelling 5 miles away. There is really no
feeling like it! One of the Wahoo weighed in at 47lbs and
the other 27lbs. We then dropped the lines again and made
another pass. Sure enough, we got slammed by another
Wahoo, unfortunately this crafty devil managed to spit the
hooks before we could get a gaff in him. We then trolled
like crazy and caught around 30 Macks with a couple of
contenders in the mix. Somehow we managed to dodge the
Jacks and only land meat fish today! Some of the other
fishermen were giving us shit for catching so many Jacks
the day before, but they can keep crying because first
place for the overall weight division is a brand new Penn
International, and I think it would look really good in
the Va Pue’s spread! After we had our share of Macks we
decided to head offshore and troll south to San Juan and
hopefully cross paths with some Sailfish and Dorado. We
managed to catch a few small Dorado, but couldn’t raise a
sail. At about 4:20pm we decided it was time to pull the
lines, slam some cold Tonas, and head back to make the
5:00pm deadline. Upon arrival in San Juan we were feeling
pretty confident that we had the first place wahoo, but
just as we started pulling ours out, another boat pulled
up with a stud that weighed 59lbs. We kept our fingers
crossed until the weigh in to see if our other catches
would hold up. Turns out we ended up taking home more
trophies than any other boat in the tourney. I think the
tourney directors were kind of sick of us coming up so
many times to get more trophies. In true Va Pue SUBU
style, the whole team headed up each time to collect the
trophies, until we had 5 trophies and a bitchin’ brand new
Penn International. We ended up tying for 1st place with a
10lb Mack, we took 2nd and 3rd place in the Mack division
as well. We took 1st place for overall weight with 620lbs
of fish (second only had 76lbs). We got 2nd place for
wahoo with the 47 pounder, and we got 1st place for
biggest Jack at 17lbs. We also got 3rd place in the open
category, but I am not sure what fish that was for! I am
truly stoked for the whole team and I am really proud we
were able to come back this year and put Surfari on the
podium. I would like to send a big thanks to all of the
tournament directors and sponsors for putting on a great
event!
