Today we woke up at O-Dark-Thirty ready to
rumble in the Flor de Cana Fishing Tournament in San Juan
del Sur. The wind report was not what we were hoping for,
(15-23 knots offshore) so we were forced to fish more
inshore than what we would have liked. It would have been
nice to go 30 or 40 miles offshore, but in a 25 foot panga
with 2 feet of freeboard, we definitely made the right
choice. We ended up getting into some nice Mackerals and
some Jacks. We were hoping for a Wahoo, but it was not
happening today. The wind was hammering us the whole time
so we decided to start hammering Tonas and Victorias. We
made it back to the scales in one piece and were greeted
with cold Centenario Flor de Cana rum from Don Carlos'
Flor de Cana Girls. The rest of the fleet had a tough one
as well. Many of the boats came back empty handed or with
meager catches. Carlos ended up releasing the only
Sailfish 30 miles offshore and took first place for the
Sailfish division. No Marlin were caught and a 12 lb
Dolphin took first place in the Dolphin division. We had
two 11.5 lb Macks that took second and third place behind
a 14 lb-er in the Mackeral division. We took 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place in the Jack division. A Roosterfish around 15 lb
took that division. A 55lb Wahoo took first place in the
Wahoo divison. Even though the fishing was pretty beat,
the tournament turned out to be a huge success. Carlos
announced that the tournament will be run every year from
here on out and we couldn't be more stoked. After we
loaded up all of our trophies, we cruised through San Juan
del Sur and gave away all of our fish. The locals were
amping! True Va Pue spirit!!! We would like to send out a
big thanks to Roger Valencia and crew for organizing the
tournament and of course we would like to send a huge
thanks to Carlos Pellas for sponsoring another great
event. Yeah!!!! SUBU!!!!
