Captain’s Log: Entry

Today is the day of the big Captain’s
meeting before the annual Flor de Caña Billfish
Championships. This is the day I look forward to all year
long. We arrived at the Marina a week ago and there was
nobody here. Today everyone showed up and the place turned
into a big party. Giant yachts and helicopters were coming
in every couple of minutes and the place was buzzing with
activity. We spent the morning getting all of our gear
locked and loaded, and then we just sat in awe as all of
these amazing boats pulled into the marina. The Flor de
Caña girls also showed up so the boys started frothing
immediately! Flor de Caña was being handed out everywhere.
You could not walk ten steps without a girl handing you a
drink! Our team was not intimidated, even though we are
the only panga in the tourney and the only boat with a
single engine. I think we are all hoping David can take
down Goliath. I definitely know we are trying harder than
anyone, and we probably want this to happen more than
anyone as well. After we got registered and received all
of our tournament gift bags, we cruised down to the Va Pue
to drink a couple of beers. At the boat, we busted out the
sharpie, and wrote SUBU on all of our lures and teasers.
SUBU is our secret weapon, and we are not scared to use
it! Then it was off to the big Captain’s meeting to get
the low down on the rules. Our buddy Don Carlos Pellas
(Owner of Flor de Caña) was in charge of the meeting and
gave us all the breakdown on the rule changes for this
year’s event. This year all natural baits had to be
trolled with circle hooks, a great step toward Billfish
conservation. After the meeting everyone pounded rum and
partied to make sure they had a proper hang-over for the
first day of fishing!
