| This week we had Surf Europe magazine down with us doing an article on Nicaragua. Alex Laurel was the photographer and trip organizer, along with him came pro surfers Pete Mendia and Jason Aparicio. The boys and their boards arrived just fine on the first day, but the airlines managed to lose all but one of Alex’s cameras. It took three days for all of his gear to get here (thumbs down to Air France)! On the second day of their trip, Alex was taking a picture of a snake eating a frog. Everyone was standing around watching as he was getting close and personal taking shots of the snake. Being the Jackass that I am, I decided to pull his chain a little. I snuck over to the truck and pulled out a four foot piece of rope and snuck up behind Alex. I threw the rope on his back as he was crouched over the snake and yelled AGHHHHH! What I thought would be a harmless gag, turned horrifying as Alex jumped out of his skin and threw his 6 thousand dollar camera in the air. Time stood still as we all watched the only camera fly through the air and come crashing to the ground. To say the least, I felt like a total A-hole (Sorry again Alex!) Anyway, he was able to duct tape the lens and other crucial components together and keep shooting until the rest of his gear arrived a day later. Unfortunately, the bad luck didn’t end there for Alex. Upon getting the rest of his gear, the boys paddled out to take some water shots with the new water housing. Yep, you guessed it, the housing leaked and totally destroyed his other 6 thousand dollar camera! In the end though, it all worked out, and they managed to get some sick waves and sick shots. The boys were pumped to check out some slabs and heavy beachies. A big thanks to Alex for all of the shots (copyright Alex Laurel, Surf Europe Magazine) |
